It’s been 18 years since Florence and Edward’s daughter died and they were thrust into the position of raising her children, their grandkids, Bobby and Karen. During those 18 years they coped with the loss of their daughter by going through the motions of raising another family. But they never dealt with the pain, anger, and bitter resentment simmering below the surface, until now. Florence, recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, begins preparing for her own death. Edward, newly retired and home all day, is gnawing away at her last nerve. Although Florence has made her end-of-life wishes clear through advance directives, she does not trust that her husband is capable of fulfilling her desire to die with dignity, and sets down a path to cutting him off to what remains of her life. Bobby and Karen, with problems of their own, are caught in the middle. The family splinters as all the unresolved, dormant heartache and pain finally erupts. HATCH is a fresh, yet stark slice, of Americana through the eyes of one family coping with loss, filling voids, and struggling with their own mortality. HATCH is a timely, relevant story because as the baby boom generation gets olderand technological advancements improve disease treatment to extend lifecontrol over difficult end-of-life decisions will become a much-discussed, prominent social issue. What had begun as an innocent, quiet, relaxing trip somehow turns into a quest for redefining the rules of their relationship. Can they ever return to “normal” again in order to keep their family intact?
